Building a Vibrant Community Through Reform Judaism

Temple Emanu-El of Waterford, Connecticut is the Reform Jewish community of the Greater New London area.

We are inclusive, egalitarian, and support the diversity of the Greater New London Jewish community, particularly non-Jewish partners in interfaith relationships.

The doors of TE are always open to all seeking a spiritual home.  We strive to live our Judaism every day in all the places we find ourselves.

The Social Action Committee of Temple Emanu-El is proud to announce that the campaign to collect Physical Therapy equipment has been successful.  Over 6 months, members of the Jewish community of Southeastern Connecticut as well as the Chelsea Foundation in Groton, the Estuary Senior Center of Old Saybrook, Charlie’s Closet in Guilford, American Friends of Kenya, Central Connecticut State University “Chariots of Hope “ in New Britain, the A 2 Z Medical Supply in East Lyme, NEAT (New England Assistive Technology)in Hartford and Emma Davis Medical Equipment Ministry in Milford have donated 400 crutches, 200 walkers, 200 canes and 18 wheel chairs.

A shipping container provided by Partners in Health, the non-profit organization started by Dr. Paul Farmer, was loaded by members of Temple Emanu-el on October 5th and 6th and is expected to reach Haiti on October 20th.  The equipment will be used in the new rehab center of the Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais, in Haiti, where Jonah Feldman has been working for the last year and a half.

All the donated equipment was kept in the Feldman’s basement until the arrival of the shipping container.  The equipment was then loaded into a 16-foot rented truck which met up with the container truck in the parking lot of Walmart in Waterford.  All the equipment was then transferred from the rented truck to the container, which is bound for Florida and then Haiti.

The committee wants especially to thank the following people for their help:  Wayne Silver, Rabbi Aaron Rosenberg, Geoff, Susan and David Hausmann, Brian Lazarus, Roberta Reisner-Winograd, Alvin Sher, Sheryl Reagan, Rich McCaffrey, Irene Brickman-Smith and Tom Smith, Norma Hollandersky, Lynn Brown, John Murphy, and Anna Feldman, Cécile and Barry Feldman; also the Mitzvah fund and the Rabbi’s discretionary fund of Temple Emanu-El for covering the cost of the truck rental.
