For those of you who may not know Terri Goldsmith, let me tell you about her. She was the first person to greet me when I came to a Temple Emanu-El Open House in 1987. Terri immediately made me feel at home with her kindness and we became best friends. It was as if we had known each other for a lifetime. She was very involved in Temple life and gave her all to Emanu-El. Terri and Marc joined Temple Emanu-El in 1980, and she became a Jew by choice in September of 1987. She continued on her journey and also became a Bat Mitzvah in April of 1991. She began teaching in our religious school and taught for 30 years. She still remains in the hearts of her students as their favorite teacher. Terri used her creativity to help make learning more fun for her students. She would teach about Israel by creating an in-class flight to Tel Aviv. Each week she created a part of Israel, from the Western Wall, to the shuks, (market places), in Jerusalem. She even created a Kibbutz and a Bedouin Tent for the kids to experience. Each holiday her students created something: a kiddush cup, seder plate, challah, and even matzah for Passover. Terri’s creativity knew no bounds, because she loved her students. Terri took over baking for oneg’s for a year or two and they were always special. Terri also worked at Solomon Schechter Academy for over 30 years and was loved by the students she taught. Terri received the Ilson Award in 2006 for her dedication to Emanu-El and when she passed in March of 2019, so many people from Emanu-El and the greater Jewish community, whom she had touched in her lifetime, filled our synagogue. Terri Goldsmith was an amazing person, filled with love for people, and a passion for teaching our children the beauty and importance of Judaism. Most of all, she had the best laugh and was my sister in soul. I’m so happy that this Golf Tournament is being named after such a shining light in our community.
